Sam holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Research Data Management and a Bachelor’s in English Literature.

She has worked across libraries, government agencies, bookstores, and writing centers, always guided by a passion for connecting people with the resources they need and committed to making information open, inclusive, and sustainable.

Her research interests include metadata ethics, inclusive cataloging, and advocating for ethical, user-centered approaches to metadata creation and discovery.

Her published work explores how emerging technologies intersect with late capitalism and critically examining the commodification of information.

Open research helps increase the visibility of important discoveries and extend them to new places. It also helps to increase participation in research by underrepresented and underfunded groups. The open research ecosystem extends beyond just open access to data and publications. The principles of openness in research should extend to the entire research lifecycle, including education.

Digitizing Your Home Videos: A Digital Curation Topic

To digitize home movies, there are a few options to choose from. For this project, I’m going to focus on the few of you who do have the time to do it yourself at home. This process requires a few
additional materials, but it has its benefits and the steps to do so can be easily followed. One benefit is that you’ll be able to transfer your tapes directly from the VHS tape into a digital file,
as opposed to another physical format, which allows you to preserve them on a hard drive or even in the cloud.

The English Honors Thesis is the final project for an English major enrolled in the departmental English Honors Program. Students may write a creative thesis or a critical thesis in the areas of literature, professional writing, or linguistics. The Honors Thesis should present a student’s original research and writing. It should demonstrate a student’s ability to think critically and write clearly and originally about the thesis subject, and, for critical theses, should demonstrate the student’s familiarity with published research in the thesis subject area.

As librarians, there is a responsibility to provide access to materials and information. However, a balance has to be struck between personal ethics and the execution of professional responsibilities. To serve the patron and prevent further issues in providing potentially inappropriate materials to young readers, avenues such as recommending related but more appropriate titles or consulting with parents if available may need to be considered.
